About the Webinar
This webinar is based on Dr. Mureriwa’s 2017 publication in the journal Current Advances in Neurology and Neurological Sciences entitled
“Common Factors in Psychotherapy: The Autonomic Nervous System Final Common Pathway”.
The practice of psychotherapy is guided by five main approaches, namely psychodynamic therapies, behaviour therapies, cognitive behaviour therapies, humanistic therapies, and integrative therapies. Since the 1930’s researchers have noted that psychotherapies based on competing schools of psychotherapy are equally effective in the treatment of psychological disorders. The consensus is that competing approaches, such as psychodynamic vs behavioural, are equally effective because they share certain psychotherapeutic factors in common. Lambert carried out a meta-analysis, which showed that the common therapeutic factors were extra-therapeutic factors (40%), relationship factors (30%), placebo, hope, & expectancy (15%), and therapy technique (15%).
In the webinar, Dr. Mureriwa presents arguments that these common psychotherapeutic factors have a biological final common pathway, the autonomic nervous system. This is the same pathway on which psychotropic medications converge. The webinar participants will learn how to include biological factors when formulating a diagnosis, and how to apply psychophysiological techniques in psychotherapy.
